Science in Tent - A Memorable Day at Noguchi on July 1

A Memorable Day at Noguchi on July 1

On July 1, a vibrant wave of curiosity swept through the Noguchi Memorial Research Center, now widely known as the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) in Legon. Queen’s Court student attended Science in Tent, a four-day STEM fair aimed at inspiring the next generation of scientists—especially undergraduates and junior high school learners.

According to the organizers, the event is part of Vacation Initiatives in Science Africa and ran from July 1 to July 4 at NMIMR . With its hands-on design, Science in Tent offers real-world, interactive exposure to critical STEM fields: biology, chemistry, physics, and even cutting-edge medical sciences. NMIMR’s 2023 STEM fair was similarly themed, focusing on giving underprivileged JHS students access to practical experiments in various scientific disciplines

🎤 Student Voice – “A Day of Discovery”

The atmosphere buzzed with the energy of young minds engaging with everything from pipetting DNA to exploring microscopy. Our Queen’s Court attendee reflected:

“I got to see real scientists working in their labs, perform experiments with them, and even ask questions.”

That hands-on approach—seeing the gear, hearing the lab chatter, and handling reagents—left a lasting impression.

🔬 Highlights of the Day

  • Microscopy and Cultures: Seeing cells come to life under the microscope was a major highlight.

  • Basic Diagnostics: Students practiced injecting dye into gel simulations and observed capillary action.

  • Interactive Talks: Scientists gave live demonstrations and explained their research in everyday terms.

  • Career Guidance: Discussions on pathways to pharmaceutical, clinical, and research roles motivated many.

🌱 Why It Matters

Initiatives like this open doors. Not only do they demystify science, but they also push young learners—many from less-privileged backgrounds—to consider future roles in medicine and research. According to NMIMR, such fairs aim to "expose underprivileged JHS students to various STEM disciplines through practical experiments"—a powerful way to sow seeds of curiosity and ambition

✨ Final Reflections

The day culminated in inspired conversations among peers and mentors alike. Our Queen’s Court student left not only with knowledge, but with the excitement of plotting a path forward—perhaps in biomedical research, perhaps in clinical diagnostics—but undoubtedly empowered by real experience.
